Press Release “It’s Time” Sapiens debut album In 2018, pianist Matthew Sazima, drummer Daniel Rossi, and bassist Ross Garlow, began a project called Sapiens. It was as an outlet to experiment with their original compositions and a means to perform that music. They realized quickly that the ensemble had a unique voice and could shape each of their pieces into something completely their own. They took from their backgrounds in metal, classical, funk, psych rock, and fueled it into their jazz “power trio”. The music is intended to encompass the emotional spectrum of a human being (Sapien). In 2020, Rossi moved to New York, after which, a recording project was discussed. In 2022, the trio spent two days in The Hallowed Halls Recording Studio, recording a handful of compositions that they felt would showcase the unique qualities of each member. After a few years of refining, the album was completed in summer 2025 and is set for release March 1, 2026. The project's completion marks an important documentation of Ross, Matt, and Dan’s friendship, as well as a culmination of their past and present, sharing a snapshot along their journeys of a moment that they all believed in. In celebration of their release, and growth as friends and bandmates, Sapiens will perform their debut record release show in Portland, OR on March 1st, 2026 at The 1905, where the trio’s journey began. “It’s Time” by Matt Sazima, is the title track of the album. They felt “It’s Time” was analogous to the meditative patience it took to see this work to its completion. Pieces like “Lifeblood”, by Ross Garlow, and “Each Step”, by Daniel Rossi, reflect the growth that accompanies this patience, as each piece unfurls slowly to exciting and unique climaxes. These works provide balance to pieces like “The 9th Time” by Matt Sazima, an exciting uptempo exploration of swing, syncopation, and perseverance through repetition. Please join the band and purchase tickets through The 1905’s website. The album will be available for purchase through Bandcamp and it will be available on most streaming platforms (not Spotify). The band would like to thank sound engineer Scott Stanley, mixing engineer Sahil Ansari, mastering engineer Dana White, The 1905 for everything they do for the Portland music scene, and Chad Vinson Tucker who created the truly magnificent pointillism that matches the tone of the album perfectly. From the band: The US is being tormented with hate, bigotry, a fascist government, and an illegal army. We come together both in the music, and in the world, to reach a greater peace and stand with humans (Sapiens) fighting for a safe future for all. The band and artist Chad Vinson Tucker plan to sell 12x12 prints of the album artwork at the release show. All profits will go towards the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition.
